An easy to follow graphic organizer on the preterite tense in Spanish where students can easily take notes. All verb types are included: Regular, spelling change, irregular, and -ir stem change. The uses of the preterite and trigger words (ex: ayer) are already filled in for the students. Pages 1-7 are the actual graphic organizer and pages 8-14 is are the answer key.

In this speaking activity, students will first fill out the endings for -ar, -er and -ir verbs. Then, they will complete the question answer chart. After that, they will interview a classmate with personal questions using the verbs hablar, aprender, and escribir. With the personal questions, they will ask the same question to their partner but they must conjugate the verb to match the new subject.

Guidelines and an example are shown below. An oral practice to review the following tenses: Present, ir + a + infinitive, preterite, imperfect, future, present perfect, and present subjunctive. The activity has 42 personal questions, 7 questions per verb (hablar, empezar, jugar, buscar, tener, and pedir). Students can do the oral practice in pairs. As a follow up, students can complete the practice as a homework assignment or it can also be a part of teacher's sub plans.

A short exit slip to review the present and preterit tenses in the form of an original paragraph. Guidelines (on the assignment) are: Write a 7 sentence paragraph in the present tense with 7 different verbs (1 ar, 1 er, 1 ir, 1 car, 1 gar, 1 zar and the verb ir). Every sentence must start with a different subject or subject pronoun (yo, ella etc) and have at least six words; the paragraph can be about anything. Then underline or circle the present tense verbs and below the paragraph, change just the circled verbs to the preterite tense; it’s not necessary to write the entire sentence in the preterite. Any verb repeated will not receive any credit.

Las vacaciones de navidad (Christmas vacation / holidays speaking activity) Page 1 This speaking activity can be done when students return to school from their Christmas vacation / holidays. For the first part, students interview each other with questions on what they did over Christmas vacation using the preterit tense. (10 questions total) For the second part, students will interview each other on what they used to do over Christmas break, as a child with similar questions as the first part, but this time in the imperfect tense. (10 questions total) As an extension, this activity can also be done as a classwork or homework assignment by having students write out the answers to these questions.
